NILU's Strategic Institute Initiatives (SIS) 2016. NILU report

Aas, W.; Rundén-Pran, E.; Breivik, K.; Sundseth, K.; Høiskar, B. A.; Platt, S.; Castell, N.; Schlabach, M.

Each of NILU's Strategic Institute Initiatives (SIS) is required to deliver a popular science report annually to the Research Council. This report contains NILU's final reports for the SIS-projects that ended in 2016, and annual SIS-reports for 2016 for the other SIS-projects.

Final report. Support in development and implementation of air quality e-Reporting in West Balkan. NILU report

Ødegård, R. Å.; Kobernus, M. J.

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), 4sfera Innova SLU (4sfera) and EKONERG have been commissioned to develop a software solution for Air Quality e-Reporting for the West Balkan countries

The software solution has been successfully installed and training has been provided. For the reporting of air quality according to the air quality directives 2004/107/EC and 2008/50/EC, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia has used the software for reporting 2015 data to EEA.

Metal pollution around Norwegian industries studied by analysis of naturally growing moss samples. 2015 survey. NILU report

Steinnes, E.; Uggerud, H. T.

On request from the Norwegian Environment Agency, a survey of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals around industrial enterprises in Norway has been carried out. The participation was voluntary and 22 industries located at 17 different sites financed their own participation. The survey is based on analysis of samples of naturally growing moss collected around the
enterprises during the summer of 2015 and includes 57 different elements. For a majority of the sites this survey is a followup of corresponding surveys carried out in 2000, 2005, and 2010. In general the results show that deposition of heavy metals close to the industries depends closely on the industrial processes used as well as the local topographic and meteorological conditions. The results are evaluated relative to corresponding background levels in moss in parts of Norway with low impact of air pollution. Like in previous surveys, the generally most polluted industrial location is Mo i Rana, followed by Odda. At most sites only minor general improvement is observed since the previous survey in 2010.

Land surface temperature validation for WACMOS-ET. Reference input data set validation report. NILU report

Schneider, P.; Prata, F.; Martins, J.; Pires, A.; Trigo, I.; Jimenez, C.; Goettsche, F.; Hook, S. J.

The Land Surface Temperature (LST) products generated specifically for the WAter Cycle Observation Multi-mission Strategy - EvapoTranspiration (WACMOS-ET)project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), are evaluated with respect to their overall quality. LST products derived from observations acquired by the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR), the Multi-Functional Transport Satellite (MTSAT), and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) were studied here. Following previously established best-practices on LST validation, the evaluation includes both a qualitative component addressing general issues with the data, as well as a quantitative component, which compares the LST products directly against a reference dataset. For the latter satellite LST is compared against both ground-based in situ datasets acting as a source of absolute reference data and against independent satellite-based LST products from other sensors to provide a spatially exhaustive relative comparison.

NILU's Environmental Management Report 2016. NILU report

Braathen, O.-A.; Marsteen, L.; Skogvoll, T. L.; Andresen, E. B.; Fjeldstad, H.

One of NILU's main goals is to study the impact of pollution and supply decision-makers with a sound scientific platform for choosing measures to reduce the negative impacts. Furthermore, it is very important for the institute to have control of the impact the institute¿s own activities may have on the environment and to reduce negative impacts as far as possible.NILU has for many years been working to improve the status of the environment and to reduce negative impacts. In order to take this one step further, it was decided that the institute should restructure the work according to a relevant environmental standard and to seek certification according to the same standard. The chosen standard is ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management systems¿Requirements with guidance for use) and NILU achieved certification according to this standard in October 2010. This report summarizes the results of the system in 2016.
