A life cycle perspective on the benefits of renewable electricity generation

Bouman, Evert

In this report, the benefits of the use of RES to produce electricity are investigated from a life cycle perspective. Six different impact indicators for the production of electricity are estimated for all Member States in the period 2005 to 2018 for a total of sixteen different renewable and non-RES. Results show variability in impact intensities across Member States and years, depending among others on fuel conversion efficiency (for electricity produced using combustion processes) and capacity utilization (for electricity producing from non-combustion processes, such as wind power). Finally, an estimate is given on gross avoided impact by comparing historic values to a counterfactual scenario where the level of electricity production from RES is frozen at 2005 level. Results show that the increased use of photovoltaic and wind power have contributed significantly to gross avoided impacts across the investigated impact indicators. A trade-off is that the increased use of PV appears to have increased potential ecotoxicity related impacts of the European electricity production system. The increased use of solid biomass for the generation of electricity and heat generally has a positive effect on avoided impacts, at the cost of increased potential land occupation. Overall, these finding can aid policy makers and private actors direct efforts towards specific areas which offer opportunities to decrease the impacts.

In 2019, in the framework of Oslo being European Green Capital, NILU invited students from elementary schools to
measure air pollution in their neighbourhood, using simple and affordable measuring methods based on paper and
Vaseline. The students prepared the measuring devices and selected the places where they wanted to monitor. After one
week, they retrieved the devices and used a scale to compare the amount of dust fastened to the Vaseline. All of the data
gathered by the students was uploaded by the teachers to a website (https://luftaforalle.nilu.no/), where a map showed all the results from the participating schools. The school campaign has helped researchers to get data on particulate matter from many places where data was not available, and has increased awareness among the children about the sustainability challenges cities are facing.

Hak, Claudia

På oppdrag fra Elkem Carbon AS, har NILU utført målinger av arsen (As) i omgivelsene til Elkem Carbon i Vågsbygd
(Kristiansand kommune). Rapporten dekker målinger i perioden 25. september 2019 – 28. september 2020. Et langtransportert bidrag til de to høyeste registrerte As døgnkonsentrasjonene kan ikke utelukkes.

This programme, “Environmental Contaminants in an Urban Fjord” has covered sampling and analyses of sediment and organisms in a marine food web of the Inner Oslofjord, in addition to samples of blood and eggs from herring gull. The programme also included inputs of pollutants via surface water (storm water), and effluent water and sludge from a sewage treatment plant. The bioaccumulation potential of the contaminants in the Oslo fjord food web was evaluated. The exposure to/accumulation of the contaminants was also assessed in birds. A vast number of chemical parameters have been quantified, in addition to some biological effect parameters in cod, and the report serves as a status description of the concentrations of these chemicals in different compartments of the Inner Oslofjord marine ecosystem.

European air quality maps for 2017. PM10, PM2.5, Ozone, NO2 and NOx spatial estimates and their uncertainties.

Horálek, Jan; Schreiberova, Marketa; Schneider, Philipp; Kurfürst, Pavel; Schovánková, Jana; Doubalová, Jana

The paper provides the annual update of the European air quality concentration maps and population exposure estimates for human health related indicators of pollutants PM10 (annual average, 90.4 percentile of daily means), PM2.5 (annual average), ozone (93.2 percentile of maximum daily 8-hour means, SOMO35, SOMO10) and NO2 (annual average), and vegetation related ozone indicators (AOT40 for vegetation and for forests) for the year 2017. The report contains also NOx annual average concentration map for 2017. The trends in exposure estimates in the period 2005-2017 for PM10 and ozone, resp. in the period 2007-2017 for PM2.5 are summarized. The analysis is based on interpolation of annual statistics of the 2017 observational data reported by EEA Member countries in 2016 and stored in the Air Quality e-reporting database. The mapping method is the Regression – Interpolation – Merging Mapping. It combines monitoring data, chemical transport model results and other supplementary data using linear regression model followed by kriging of its residuals (residual kriging). The paper presents the mapping results and gives an uncertainty analysis of the interpolated maps.

MetVed v.2.0. Improvement and update of the MetVed emission model for residential wood combustion

Grythe, Henrik; Lopez-Aparicio, Susana

This report presents the update of the MetVed-model (Grythe et al., 2019). Among the updates are new emission factors and several new species that include climate gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O). There is now a new parameter that describes the emission altitude and a new and improved time variation. Activity data has been updated to the most recent year (2019), which also has required updates to the model and model input variables. The largest update has been the holiday cabin emission module, which is an entirely new addition. Emissions from cabins differ in several ways from residential emissions. The most notable difference is that cabins are spread over more rural areas and are more dispersed than the residential dwellings. The model differentiates alpine and coastal cabins, which is an important distinction as a high density of cabins exists along the coast and they are mainly used during summer.

Feasibility study for asphalt rubber pavements in Norway. ‘Rubber Road’ feasibility study.

Bouman, Evert; Meland, Sondre; Furuseth, Ingvild Skumlien; Tarrasón, Leonor

RubberRoad proposes to use rubber from used tires in the production of asphalt for road and bicycle ways. This recycling approach has not gained much attention in Norway despite its apparent advantages, such as noise reduction, increased durability, safer shock impact, and reduced climate and environmental impacts. The Life Cycle Analysis carried out during this project feasibility study has demonstrated a series of environmental benefits in the use of rubber in asphalt production. It has also helped identify relevant knowledge gaps related to the use phase of the rubberized asphalt and its impact to noise, air and micro-plastic pollution. Better understanding of these effects would probably result in even larger environmental benefits of rubberized asphalt with respect to standard asphalt production. However, while the tire recycling industry is generally positive to the disposal of used tires in asphalt production, additional incentives need to be put in place for the Norwegian asphalt producers to consider actively contributing to this development.

I denne rapporten presenteres
resultater fra skogskadeovervåkingen i Norge i 2019 og trender over tid.....
