In 2019, in the framework of Oslo being European Green Capital, NILU invited students from elementary schools to
measure air pollution in their neighbourhood, using simple and affordable measuring methods based on paper and
Vaseline. The students prepared the measuring devices and selected the places where they wanted to monitor. After one
week, they retrieved the devices and used a scale to compare the amount of dust fastened to the Vaseline. All of the data
gathered by the students was uploaded by the teachers to a website (https://luftaforalle.nilu.no/), where a map showed all the results from the participating schools. The school campaign has helped researchers to get data on particulate matter from many places where data was not available, and has increased awareness among the children about the sustainability challenges cities are facing.

Prøvetaking og analyse av arsen (As) i omgivelsesluft ved Elkem Carbon. September 2019 – september 2020.

On behalf of Elkem Carbon AS, NILU has carried out measurements of arsenic (As) in the surroundings of Elkem Carbon in Vågsbygd (Kristiansand municipality). The company was ordered by the Norwegian Environment Agency to carry out As-measurements in ambient air. PM10 samples taken with a filter sampler in the residential area on Fiskåtangen (Konsul Wilds vei) were analysed for As by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This report covers measurements in the period 25 September 2019 – 28 September 2020. The annual average concentration of As was measured at 2.38 ng/m3. The target value in the air quality directive of 6 ng/m3 was complied with by a good margin. The annual average value was marginally lower than the lower assessment threshold of 2.4 ng/m3. A long range transported contribution to the two highest registered daily As-concentrations cannot be ruled out.

Environmental Contaminants in an Urban Fjord, 2019

This programme, “Environmental Contaminants in an Urban Fjord” has covered sampling and analyses of sediment and organisms in a marine food web of the Inner Oslofjord, in addition to samples of blood and eggs from herring gull. The programme also included inputs of pollutants via surface water (storm water), and effluent water and sludge from a sewage treatment plant. The bioaccumulation potential of the contaminants in the Oslo fjord food web was evaluated. The exposure to/accumulation of the contaminants was also assessed in birds. A vast number of chemical parameters have been quantified, in addition to some biological effect parameters in cod, and the report serves as a status description of the concentrations of these chemicals in different compartments of the Inner Oslofjord marine ecosystem.

The nickel smelters in northwest-Russia emit large quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and heavy metals. These emissions lead to enhanced concentrations of environmental pollutants in the border areas. The monitoring programme shows that air quality in the border areas was in compliance with Norwegian critical levels for SO2 for the calendar year 2019, as well as for seasonal mean for winter 2018/19. In January 2019, there were two episodes with elevated concentrations of SO2 at Svanvik. At 25 January 2019, the local population was notified by SMS. Target values for Ni and As were met.

MetVed v.2.0. Improvement and update of the MetVed emission model for residential wood combustion

This report presents the update of the MetVed-model (Grythe et al., 2019). Among the updates are new emission factors and several new species that include climate gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O). There is now a new parameter that describes the emission altitude and a new and improved time variation. Activity data has been updated to the most recent year (2019), which also has required updates to the model and model input variables. The largest update has been the holiday cabin emission module, which is an entirely new addition. Emissions from cabins differ in several ways from residential emissions. The most notable difference is that cabins are spread over more rural areas and are more dispersed than the residential dwellings. The model differentiates alpine and coastal cabins, which is an important distinction as a high density of cabins exists along the coast and they are mainly used during summer.

The companies were ordered by the Norwegian Environment Agency to carry out SO2 measurements in ambient air. The measurements were performed with an SO2 monitor in the residential area at
Fiskåtangen (Konsul Wilds vei) and with passive SO2 samplers at 6 locations around the industries. The report covers
measurements in the period 1. September 2019 – 31. August 2020. Norwegian limit values for air quality (SO2) were complied with at Konsul Wilds vei for all averaging periods required by the air quality directive (annual average, winter average, daily average and hourly average). The most polluted locations during the measurement period were Konsul Wilds vei and Fiskåveien just south of the industries.

Environmental pollutants in the terrestrial and urban environment 2019

Prøver fra det urbane terrestriske miljøet i Oslo-området ble analysert for flere uorganiske og organiske miljøgifter. De
utvalgte artene var meitemark, gråtrost, spurvehauk, brunrotte, rødrev og kattugle. Luft- og jordprøver ble også analysert for å øke forståelsen av kilder og opptak av miljøgifter. En næringskjedetilnærming ble valgt for å undersøke trofisk magnifisering av de forskjellige stoffene.

Revidert tiltaksutredning for lokal luftkvalitet i Stavanger

The air quality assessment for Stavanger covers mapping of the air quality in Stavanger through traffic, emission and dispersion calculations of PM10, PM2,5 and NO2 for the present situation (2018) and future scenarios (2024) with and without measures. Based on the calculations and in coordination with Stavanger municipality, a plan for improved local air quality and a management plan for periods with high concentration levels is proposed for political processing.

Feasibility study for asphalt rubber pavements in Norway. ‘Rubber Road’ feasibility study.

RubberRoad foreslår å bruke gummi fra brukte bildekk i asfaltproduksjon til bil- og sykkelveier. Denne resirkuleringsmetoden er ikke særlig kjent i Norge, til tross for påviste fordeler som blant annet støyreduksjon, økt holdbarhet, støtdemping ved ulykker samt redusert klima- og miljøpåvirkning. Livssyklusanalysen, som ble utført i løpet av dette prosjektets gjennomførbarhetsstudie, har vist en rekke miljøfordeler ved bruk av gummi i asfaltproduksjon. Den har også bidratt til å identifisere kunnskapshull relatert spesielt til bruken av gummiasfalten og dens innvirkning på støy, luft og mikro-plastforurensning. Bedre forståelse av disse effektene vil trolig føre til enda større miljøfordeler av gummiasfalt i forhold til standard asfaltproduksjon. Imidlertid, mens dekkgjenvinningsindustrien generelt er positiv til bruk av brukte dekk i asfaltproduksjon, må det legges til rette for ytterligere incitamenter for at norske asfaltprodusenter skal vurdere å bidra aktivt til denne utviklingen.

Equinor Mongstad. Spredningsberegninger av utslipp til luft.

NILU has performed dispersion calculations for emissions of NOx, SOx and particles to air from Mongstad refinery north of Bergen on the west coast of Norway. Hourly mean concentrations have been calculated using the Gaussian model CONCX. All hourly mean values are below Norwegian threshold values. Regional model calculations using the WRF-EMEP model system, show low values of NOx, SOx and particles in the vicinity of the Mongstad refinery. All calculated values are below Norwegian threshold values. Deposition calculations show that 12 % of nitrogen, 17 % of sulphur and 18 % of PM10 from Mongstad are deposited within the innermost model grid (105 x 105 km2). As an additional study, the components lead, mercury, chromium, PCB7, cadmium and arsenic have been assessed. The contribution from Mongstad refinery is small.
