Environmental Management Report 2012. NILU OR
One of NILU's main goals is to study the impact of pollution. It is thus very important for the institute to have control of the impact the institute's own activities may have on the environment and to reduce the impact as far as possible.
NILU has for many years been working to reduce the impact. In order to take this one step further, it was decided that the institute should restructure the work according to a relevant environmental standard and to seek certification according to the same standard.
The chosen standard is ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management systems - Requirements with guidance for use) and NILU achieved certification according to this standard in October 2010. This report summarizes the results of the system.

Air quality data. Bakka station 2011-2012. NILU OR
Monitoring of ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter (PM) have been performed at Bakka south of Mongstad for 13 consecutive full months (December 2011 to December 2012 inclusive). The nitrogen oxide and PM concentrations are very low. The ozone is at typical background ozone level.

WP 1.4.1: Visualization of modelled SEVIRI IR-scenes for quality control. NILU OR
The SEVIRI instrument produces infrared images. The report describes how the RTTOV radiative transfer model is used to simulate SEVIRI images for an ash situation.

WP 1.2 Operationalization of satellite-based volcanic ash measurements. NILU OR
Data from the SEVIRI instrument is available at NILU through EUMETCast. These data are processed at NILU to retrieve volcanic ash loading in a satellite pixel. The report describes operationalization and automatization of the data processing algorithms at NILU including how the data are made available for the Norwegian Meterological Institute.

Esso Slagentangen. Oppsummering måleprogram 2006-2011. NILU OR
NILU har utført måleprogram ved Slagen raffineri på oppdrag fra Esso Norge. Programmet innebar målinger av meteorologi, SO2, PM10, BTEX og nedbørkvalitet. De meteorologiske målingene viser at vinden er kanalisert nord/sør (topografisk effekt). Monitormålinger av SO2 ved to stasjoner i juni 2006 - des 2007, i 2009 og i 2011 viser at stasjonen nær raffineriet hadde høyeste timemiddelverdi 689,7 µg/m3 i 2007 (20 timeverdier over 350 µg/m3), 540,6 µg/m3 i 2009 (29 timeverdier over 350 µg/m3) og 1167,2 µg/m3 i 2011 (19 timeverdier over 350 µg/m3). Dvs. at luftkvaliteten overskred grenseverdien for timemiddel i 2009. Også grenseverdi for døgn (fem verdier over 1252 µg/m3 mot tre tillatte) og for år (20,3 µg/m3 mot 20 µg/m3 som gitt grense) ble overskredet i 2009. PM10 viste ingen overskridelser av grenseverdier. Benzen var over nasjonalt mål i 2009 (målt verdi 2,6 µg/m3 mot grenseverdi 2 µg/m3).

Metaller ved Xstrata. Vurdering av målt konsentrasjonsnivå. NILU OR
NILU har gjennomgått måleresultater og analyseresultater fra måleserie av tungmetaller ved Xstrata, Kristiansand. Det er gjennomført en enkel betraktning av spredning av forurensning for værsituasjoner der målestasjonen kan belastes med utslipp fra Xstrata, og de målte konsentrasjonene er tilbakeregnet til utslipp. Beregningene viser at det ikke er noe misforhold mellom rapportert utslipp og målt konsentrasjon.

Evaluation of new data sources for improving the estimation of background concentrations in Norway. NILU OR
A previous report (OR 68/2011) described a geostatistical methodology developed for creating a consistent dataset of background concentrations of NO2, O3, PM10, and PM2.5 in Norway, that are representative of a typical year. The resulting dataset has a resolution of 0.1 degrees by 0.1 degrees and is available at hourly temporal resolution. Based on this existing methodology, this study reports on the evaluation of new data sources as a means of improving such estimates of background concentrations. The potential of satellite-derived NO2 data is evaluated for guiding the geostatistics-based spatial interpolation procedure of NO2 station data in Norway. Furthermore, the output from a high-resolution atmospheric model was tested with respect to its capability of improving the spatial and temporal characterization of background concentrations. Finally, an online web mapping system was developed to make the project results easily accessible and to provide basic data analysis and visualization routines for the public.
